Anti-anti-drug

AAARGH
I was just watching the Simpsons and I saw this commerical (Quicktime-RealVideo-transcript) about a death caused by “by a driver under the influence of marijuana..” The “evidence” they give:

In a roadside study, one in three reckless drivers who were tested for drugs tested positive for marijuana.

drug-ad.jpgRoadside study for reckless driver? What did they do stop anyone, preferably with a Grateful Dead sticker, who was doing 56 m.p.h? And how did they test for marijuana? A urine test can detect marijuana use 3 months prior to the test.

These folks aren’t helping their case by misleading. When the kids who see these ads grow up, they will doubt any negative comments about drugs, even the ones that are true.

Every one of those commercials is frickin rediculous. Other peaches include:

Boy, high on pot, shoots his friend with the loaded gun lying out on his father's desk. The danger in this scenario? Clearly the pot.

1 joint has as much tar as 4 cigarettes. Tagline: "Marijuana, it's more dangerous than we all thought." Five or six years ago they used to say a joint had as much tar as 7 cigarettes! Marijuana, it's significantly less dangerous than we thought!

There are more, but my cerebro-spinal fluid is boiling to furiously to recall...

Actually, the official early 90s high school heath class scare line was that one joint had the cancerific powers of 20 cigarettes.

Then they'd show a picture of the blackened cavities that would come to replace your peachy peachy young lungs. The lungs God gave you.

Who would want to marry you then?

Funny, my poor memory actually made me think I got slightly better (emphasis on slightly) information when I was young. It may be that my parents, peers and others around me told me that while drugs have their problems, you won't turn into a junkie after the first hit off a joint.

One thing they always forget to mention about the tar in marijuana thing is that people typically smoke far less marijuana then cigarettes. So even if marijuana had seven times the tar, it would still be negligible for all but the most avid smokers.

Has anyone seen the commercial where the pothead leaves her teammates behind? The girl doesn't show up for her swim team's relay and a voice of disappointment says "Just tell them you were getting high."

Basically the messages is, "Don't smoke marijuana or you will fuck up and your friends will hate you."

The message I got was, "We don't have any detrimental statistics on marijuana so we'll just make shit up."
